The recordings for the new album began in the summer of 2010. Dave Grohl's garage served as the studio and, according to producer Butch Vig, was recorded completely analog (analog multi-track tape machine) and completely analog mixed (analog mixer and sound processing).

“Dave has an amazing studio not too far from his home, in the Valley, and it's a great, kick-ass studio, but I think he felt that if he went in there, what would he do different on this record? They'd be recording in the same room, using the same board, getting the same sort of vibe. "

“Dave has a great studio in his valley, not very far from his house. But I think there would be no difference on the album if he had used this studio. They would work in the same room, use the same desk and produce the same sound. "

Although guitarist Pat Smear has been a member of the live crew again since 2006, Wasting Light is the first album since The Color and the Shape (1997) in which he is again listed as an official member of the Foo-Fighters .

Bob Mold for the song Dear Rosemary and Krist Novoselić for the song I should have known could be won as guest musicians for the album . Grohl and Novoselic played together again for the first time since the breakup of Nirvana .

All recordings were accompanied by cameras. The material was then used in the documentary Back and Forth , which tells the story of the Foo Fighters.
