William Goldsmith (born July 4, 1972 in Seattle , Washington ) is an American drummer who became known as the drummer for the bands Sunny Day Real Estate and Foo Fighters .

Career

Goldsmith started playing drums as a child, early influences included a. The Beatles , Led Zeppelin , Elvis Costello and the Attractions , Talking Heads and Keith Moon from The Who . Moon was one of Goldsmith's role models alongside John Lennon . While still in school he founded the bands, Screaming Hormones and 13. Later he founded the hardcore punk band Reason to Hate with his friend Jeremy Enigk . After graduating, he was invited by later Tupelo Honey drummer Greg Williamson to play in his band Positive Greed.

In 1992 Goldsmith was invited by bassist Nate Mendel and guitarist Dan Hoerner to play in the emocore band Sunny Day Real Estate. Goldsmith accepted the offer and recorded two albums with the band by 1995. After Sunny Day Real Estates broke up, Goldsmith was invited by Dave Grohl, former Nirvana drummer , to play in his band, Foo Fighters.

When Sunny Day Real Estate reunited in 1997, Goldsmith left the Foo Fighters. In 1998 he released the band's third studio album How It Feels To Be Something On , which was followed in 2000 by The Rising Tide . In 2001 the band broke up for the second time.

In 1999 he worked on the Replicants album Slickaphonics , an album that has little in common with Goldsmith's other bands due to its noise and jazz influences .

In 2001 Goldsmith founded the band The Fire Theft together with his SDRE colleagues Jeremy Enigk and Nate Mendel. The group is traded as the successor project Sunny Day Real Estates.

Goldsmith was also present at the Sunny Day Real Estates reunion in 2009. After the reunification tour in 2010, new studio material was announced.
