Nathan Gregor "Nate" Mendel (born December 2, 1968 in Richland , Washington ) is an American rock musician who was best known as the bassist for the bands Sunny Day Real Estate and Foo Fighters . He is also active in the bands The Jealous Sound, Juno and The Fire Theft.

career

Mendel was born in 1968 in Richland, a small town in the US state of Washington. His first instrument was the violin before he learned bass at the age of 13 to join a band. He focused on punk rock and attended concerts held in Richland by various DIY punk bands such as Scream . Mendel mainly taught himself to play the bass, orienting himself towards hardcore punk bands like Minor Threat , Black Flag and Bad Brains .

Mendel's first "real" bands were the hardcore band Diddley Squat, the Straight Edge band Brotherhood and Christ on a Crutch. After meeting Dan Hoerner at the University of Washington , he founded the emo band Sunny Day Real Estate with Hoerner and William Goldsmith in 1992 . After Sunny Day Real Estate split in 1995, he joined Dave Grohl's band, the Foo Fighters . When Sunny Day Real Estate reunited in 1997 in order to release another album a year later, Mendel canceled and stayed - unlike his colleague William Goldsmith - with the Foo Fighters.

In 2001 he worked with the indie rock band Juno; In 2003 he took part in a break from Foo Fighters on the band's debut album The Fire Theft, which also included Sunny Day Real Estate members Jeremy Enigk and William Goldsmith.

In 2005, Mendel first appeared as an actor in a film: In the independent film Our Burden Is Light , he played a member of the fictional band Bleeder alongside his girlfriend Jessica Ballard . Mendel was also responsible for the soundtrack of this film.

When Sunny Day Real Estate reunited in 2009, Mendel was also part of the band.

In October 2012, Fender released the Nate Mendel P-Bass , his personal signature bass guitar.
