Background information

In an interview with XFM on April 26, 2007, Dave Grohl said :

“We've been in the studio for the past month and a half, and we've got about another month to go. We've been recording with our friend Gil Norton. He worked on our second record ( The Color and the Shape ), he's a good guy and he makes amazing albums. So we're making a really big powerful record, which I'm very excited about ... I can't wait to jump on stage and do this stuff, it's gonna be great. "

Kaki King took part in the piece "Ballad of the Beaconsfield Miners" . It is the first purely instrumental piece that the Foo Fighters released. Grohl wrote it for the victims of the Beaconsfield mine disaster. Two of the buried miners had asked for an iPod with Foo Fighters songs while they waited to be rescued.

The first single, "The Pretender", was released on CD on September 17, 2007 and was previously heard on the radio from August 2007 to boost album sales. The second single "Long Road To Ruin" was released on December 3rd. "Cheer Up Boys (Your Make Up Is Running)" and "Let It Die" were both only released digitally.
