Emergence

During an XFM interview in 2007, front man Dave Grohl mentioned that “The Pretender” was about political restlessness.

"That's the thing with lyrics, you never want to give away specifics, because it's nice for people to have their own idea or interpretation of the song. But, you know, everyone's been fucked over before and I think a lot of people feel fucked over right now and they're not getting what they were promised, and so something to do with that. "

about:

“The thing about lyrics is that you never want to say exactly because it's nice for everyone to have their own interpretation of the song. But, you know what, everyone has been cheated on before and I think that a lot of people feel cheated right now and don't get what they were promised and so, that's something to do with. "

Grohl also said that "The Pretender" wasn't originally planned for the album:

"That song didn't happen until later on in the session. We didn't go into making the record with that song and it happened after we recorded a lot of stuff. Up until that point, I didn't know if we had a good opening song or not. So after we recorded it, I thought, 'oh this is perfect, we have the song to open the record,' and it just became everybody's favorite song. ... It's the type of song that I look forward to opening shows with and it came together really easily. We put that song together in, I don't know, a day, whereas a lot of the other songs we worked on for weeks. "

Up until that point, I wasn't sure if we had a good opening song or not. We put the song together in one day, whereas for most of the others we worked for several weeks "

Video

The video was directed by Sam Brown.

In the video, the band plays the song in an airplane hangar with lots of lights on the ceiling. There is a red wall behind the band. Then a policeman appears with a plexiglass shield and baton. He stops at a black line about 10 m away from the tape. The number 21 is on his vest. As the video progresses, more and more police officers join them and line up to the left and right of the first. A tracking shot shows that the officers to his left have the numbers 20 - 01. There seem to be just as many police officers on the right. So you can calculate that there must be a total of 41 police officers.

During the quieter part towards the end of the song, the cops run towards the band. Just before they reach the band, the band plays the final chorus. Now the wall seems to explode (similar to the video for "American Idiot" by the American band Green Day ) and releases a large amount of red-colored liquid , which stops the police like a water cannon.
