The Color and the Shape is the second album by the American alternative rock - band Foo Fighters . After Dave Grohl's single-handed debut of the same name , the second album, released in 1997, was the Foo Fighters' first album written and recorded in a band constellation.

History of origin

After the death of Nirvana front man Kurt Cobain in 1994, the band's drummer at the time, Dave Grohl, single-handedly recorded an album under the name Foo Fighters . Grohl released the self-titled album in 1995 and shortly thereafter went looking for a band to promote the album. There were Nate Mendel as bassist, William Goldsmith on drums and Pat Smear as another guitarist alongside Grohl, who had also been active with Nirvana before. While they were on tour, the band started working on a new album. Most of the song ideas came up in the pre-concert setting room. The actual recordings did not begin until November 18, 1996 at Bear Creek Studios in Woodinville , Washington . The Color and the Shape was released on May 20, 1997 on Roswell / Capitol Records. On April 28, 1997, Monkey Wrench was released as a pre-release single . Other singles were Everlong, My Hero and the X-Files soundtrack contribution Walking After You . There were also music videos for all singles. Everlong was also awarded gold in the United States on March 31, 2006.

Reception and success

Wolfgang Schäfer from Rock Hard was of the opinion that even more than on the debut "every nuance was explored". Foo Fighters is one of the few alternative bands that would still set the tone. He awarded 8.5 out of ten possible points.

The Color and the Shape 1998 was nominated for a Grammy Award in the category Best Rock Album . Both the video for the single Monkey Wrench and for Everlong were nominated for an MTV Video Music Award in the Best Rock Video category in 1997 and 1998, respectively . Both have been at Foo Fighters concerts with My Hero since The Color and the Shape Standard was released. The readers of the Kerrang! Magazine ranked The Color and the Shape at number 10 on a list of albums to be heard before your death in 1998. The editors also listed The Color and the Shape as one of the 100 albums You Must Hear Before You Die .

Since June 2005, The Color and the Shape has held the place of the best-selling Foo Fighters album in the USA with over two million units. In 2007 a re-release of the album was released for the tenth anniversary with six previously unreleased recordings by the band, including cover versions of Gerry Rafferty's Baker Street and pieces by Gary Numan and Killing Joke .

Even when the Foo Fighters' seventh studio album, Wasting Light, was released in 2011 , The Color and the Shape is still used as a benchmark for the performance of the music group, which illustrates the outstanding position of the album, which was released 15 years earlier, in the band's history.
