Kaki King (born August 24, 1979 in Atlanta , Georgia ; real name: Katherine Elizabeth King ) is an American musician from New York .

biography

Born and raised in Atlanta, she turned to music very early on, but initially preferred drums. By trying out the guitars of her father, who let her take guitar lessons from the age of five, and inspired by artists such as The Beatles , Fleetwood Mac or The Smiths (but also Tchaikovsky ), the guitar took on an increasingly important role. After moving to New York to study at New York University , she played a lot of guitar and performed in public. During this time she recognized her lesbian predisposition. She has been very open about it ever since and is publicly committed to it. After September 11, 2001 , she played on the New York subway to "cheer up" the people. After being asked about CDs many times, she began recording demos . The recordings ended up in the hands of Jeff Krasno from Velor Records. Her debut album "Everybody Loves You" was released here in April 2003. With this album she attracted a lot of attention from fans of acoustic guitar music, she appeared in television shows and excited audiences with her youthful, ironic manner and her percussive avalanches of sound to storms of enthusiasm. The next year she signed a contract with the American record label Epic Records , on which her second album "Legs To Make Us Longer" was released. King toured tirelessly and was very successful compared to other fingerstyle guitarists. Enthusiastic articles about her appeared in various specialist magazines.

The third album "... Until We Felt Red" was produced by King at his own expense at Soma Studios in Chicago . It reappeared on her original label, Velor Records, in August 2006 after breaking the contract with Epic Records. She began to work with film music and experimented with various forms of expression and unusual ideas. Their fourth CD “Dreaming of Revenge” was released in March 2008.

King tours around the world and lives in New York between tours .

Music genre

On her first publications, her style was particularly characterized by the use of the guitar as a percussion instrument. For example, she uses the body of the guitar as a drum and uses pop and slap techniques . Furthermore, she often uses dissonant chords and complex solos in her songs. Her style of play at this stage of her career is very reminiscent of her role model Preston Reed .

On the 2008 album, the acoustic guitar takes a back seat. King has mainly produced vocal pieces, the style of her music increasingly shifted its focus from acoustic instrumental music towards pop and alternative . On the CD "... Until We Felt Red" she mainly plays electric and lap steel guitar , almost all pieces are produced with a larger cast.
