Sunny Day Real Estate (SDRE) is an emo band from the USA who were signed to Sub Pop . It was founded in Seattle in 1992 and is considered to be one of the most influential emo bands.

Band history

Sunny Day Real Estate in April 2010

Bassist Nate Mendel and guitarist Dan Hoerner first met in 1992 when they became roommates at the University of Washington . After a few jam sessions, they decided to hire William Goldsmith as a drummer. The newly founded band was named "Empty Set" and recorded a demo under this name. After the demo was completed, the band renamed themselves "Chewbacca Kaboom" "as a band called" Empty Set "already existed. After recording a second demo, the band renamed themselves again, this time to" One Day I Stopped Breathing. ”The band later changed their name one more time, this time to“ Sunny Day Real Estate. ”Mendel took the name from the Talking Heads song“ (Nothing But) Flowers ”.

However, the band continued to look for a singer. After considering a female singer, among other things, guitarist Dan Hoerner decided to sing. With the cast of Dan Hoerner (vocals, guitar), Nate Mendel (bass) and William Goldsmith (drums), Sunny Day Real Estate recorded their first single "Flatland Spider". Hoerner later invited his high school friend Jeremy Enigk to play in the band. He accepted the offer and soon became the new lead singer and front man of Sunny Day Real Estate.

In 1994 the band's first album, "Diary," was released on Sub Pop . Critical reactions were mostly positive, today it is considered one of the most important albums of emo. After several tours during which Sunny Day Real Estate built an enigmatic image (e.g. by declining interviews or refusing to perform in California ), the band began recording their second studio album. In 1995, shortly before the album was finished, SDRE separated because of internal conflicts. The material from the recording sessions was later released by Sub Pop as "LP2" and is now considered the second album Sunny Day Real Estates.

After two years of silence (during which singer Jeremy Enigk released his solo album "Return of the Frog Queen") there was a reunion with the album "How It Feels to Be Something On", which brought about a significant change in the music - SDRE sounded softer and more mature now. Nate Mendel, current bassist for the Foo Fighters , did not rejoin the band after the separation in 1995, he was replaced by Jeff Palmer. After Palmer left the band early, the role of bassist was taken over by Joe Skyward.

After the concert recording “Live”, the band split from Sub Pop because they felt restricted by the label. After a long search for a new label, Sunny Day Real Estate finally came across the indie label Time Bomb Recordings, on which the band's fourth and final album, "The Rising Tide", was released in 2000. At that time SDRE had just separated from bassist Joe Skyward, whereupon Jeremy Enigk took over his part. After the album was released, SDRE undertook their first European tour, which had to be abruptly interrupted when Time Bomb Recordings flopped after the album "Could You Please and Thank You" by Peter Searcy, which was sponsored by the label, and the Time Bomb Sunny Day Real Estate could no longer provide financial support. Disillusioned and disappointed, the band returned to the USA. Not a little later, Sunny Day Real Estate dissolved.

After the band broke up, Jeremy Enigk worked on further solo albums, Dan Hoerner worked with Chris Carrabba on songs for Dashboard Confessional . The Fire Theft with their album of the same name, released in 2003, are considered the successor band Sunny Day Real Estates, but guitarist Dan Hoerner, who has contributed a large part to the songwriting at SDRE, is not a member of the band. Nate Mendel remained a member of The Fire Theft despite his bassist work for the Foo Fighters.

After much speculation about the band's return, it was announced in June 2009 that the sub-pop label would re-release the band's first two albums in September of that year. The releases are accompanied by a tour for which the band reunited with their original line-up. As part of the tour, new songs were also written, which were recorded shortly after the end of the performances in the 606 studio of the Foo Fighters. The songs were originally planned as the band's 5th studio album, which, however, was never finished. According to William Goldsmith, all of the instrumental tracks for the album are ready, but Jeremy Enigk would only have recorded vocals for one of the songs ("Lipton Witch"). Lipton Witch was released on a split with Circa Survive for Record Store Day 2014.
