Black Flag is an American punk rock band from Hermosa Beach , California . Formed in 1976, they are considered one of the most influential bands on the early American hardcore / punk scene.

history

Black Flag formed in 1976 in the greater Los Angeles area and quickly earned a reputation for their energetic performances, which often turned into violence on the part of the audience.

As lively as their performances was the composition of the band, the only permanent member of which was guitarist Greg Ginn . Together with Charles Dukowski, who was initially the bassist of the formation, he founded the music label SST Records , which brought out numerous pioneers of punk and alternative rock . In 1986, Black Flag broke up due to creative, physical and financial exhaustion.

Ginn dedicated himself to SST Records and its offshoots. He also formed numerous bands, all of which were released on his record labels, but none of them were as successful as Black Flag before.

Dukowski played for SWA and October Faction , while he also worked for SST .

Henry Rollins founded his own band and now also works as a publisher, actor and author. He is the only former member whose subsequent projects were able to build on the success of Black Flag .

Bill Stevenson dedicated himself to his projects ALL and the Descendents .

Keith Morris formed the punk band Circle Jerks and Off! ; Dez Cadena u. a. the DC3 and was last seen with the Misfits on their anniversary tour; and Kira Roessler worked as a sound editor in the film business after studying computer science (e.g. for Insomnia ). Occasionally she tours with her ex-husband Mike Watt in the two-piece band DOS . Some of the other members remained active in music or disappeared into the Californian underground scene.

In 2013 Black Flag celebrated its reunion. The singer was Ron Reyes again, who had been a singer from 1980 to 1981. Greg Ginn took over the role of guitarist again. Brand new to the band are Dave Klein (electric bass) and Gregory Moore on drums.

In November 2013, singer Ron Reyes announced that he was leaving the band again. The reason for this are u. a. his differences with Greg Ginn and the current tour manager of the band Mike V .

Mike V, who took the microphone from Ron Reyes during a performance with Black Flag during the Australian Hits and Pits Tour and said “You're done, party's over get off it's over…” (Eng. “You're done, the party is over.) ! Go away, it's over! ") And continued to sing the rest of the gig himself, announced in January 2014 that he is officially the new singer for Black Flag. Shortly after this announcement, bassist Dave Klein announced that he would be leaving the band.

In December 2013 the new album What The… was released, on which Ron Reyes can still be heard as a singer.

Occupation 1976-1986

Surname

The name is derived from the traditional black flag of the anarchist movement , which also served as the band's trademark. The band logo is therefore also a stylized flag consisting of four black bars. The logo was designed by Greg Ginn's younger brother, the first bass player in the band Raymond Pettibon (actually Raymond Ginn), who was also responsible for the design of most of the record covers, concert flyers and fanzines during the 1970s and 1980s.

On the other hand, the name refers to the American insecticide "Black Flag".

Musical development

Over time and after many line-up changes, the style of the formation gradually changed from hardcore to doom metal , and towards the end, strong avant-garde jazz influences also flowed in . Henry Rollins, who later became known as a jazz fan, took the opportunity to present first attempts at spoken word presentations.
