SST Records is an American Underground - music label .

SST stands for Solid State Transformers and was initially a small electrical parts shipping company that Greg Ginn , guitarist of the punk band Black Flag , operated as a radio amateur . When he was looking for a way to release a Black Flag record around 1978, he started SST Records with Chuck Dukowski, who was joining Black Flag at the time as bassist .

During the 1980s, the music label has become one of the leading indie - labels the United States and released records of many popular bands like Hüsker Dü , Sonic Youth , Meat Puppets , Firehose and Minutemen as well as bands like Trotsky icepick that never this status achieved.

She was groundbreaking during this time, as she helped the trend of alternative rock with bands like Dinosaur Jr. and Soundgarden . In the beginning it was mainly punk bands, but the spectrum soon expanded to include other genres such as jazz , metal and reggae . For example, the New York avant-garde musician Elliott Sharp , who released a few recordings on SST from the 1980s onwards, belongs to the jazz sector , and the doom metal band Saint Vitus was a well-known metal act .

However, the focus was on guitar rock . In the course of time the offshoots Alliance , Issues Records and Cruz Records were formed , which mainly brought out side projects, spoken word recordings and follow -up bands from SST musicians. Since the 1990s, the label has mainly released music from all formations around and with founder Greg Ginn. During this time the importance of the label has declined significantly.

In 1991, SST went bankrupt because of a copyright lawsuit from major label Island Records . The SST band Negativland released a song called U2 at the time , using samples from U2's I Still Haven't Found what I'm Looking For . In addition, the name U2 was placed in large letters on the cover. Because of the risk of confusion and disregard for copyrights, the lawsuit was brought in agreement with Bono Vox and his band. More than $ 70,000 in damages was claimed, which marked the end of SST.
