fIREHOSE are an American rock band that existed from 1986 to 1994 and reunited for a tour in 2012. The band consists of Mike Watt ( bass , vocals), Ed Crawford ( guitar , vocals) and George Hurley ( drums ) and chose their name after a line of Bob Dylan's Subterranean Homesick Blues .

Music genre

Watt had previously represented an unusual mixture of punk with other musical styles such as folk and jazz at the Minutemen , which was therefore also assigned to jazzcore . The style of fIREHOSE is based in indie rock and mixes rock , funk , partly free jazz and folk and was occasionally assigned to post-punk . Many of the pieces by fIREHOSE are very melodic, some with catchy, sung choruses, but they also often switch to very powerful guitar riffs and fast punk-like rhythms, as in Down with the Bass . Also interesting is the changing and common singing of Crawford with his relatively high voice and the deeper singing Watt ( Quicksand ), which can be assigned to the baritone and bass. Sometimes conversations or everyday noises are also added to the recordings. Some pieces like Honey, Please and Toolin´ have echoes of soul and jazz, but cannot be assigned to any music category and show the originality of fIREHOSE.

In July 1988, Spex (magazine) adorned the cover with fIREHOSE as the "Future of Rock" n "Roll. Their latest release featured a conversation between Mike Watt, Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers , Cris Kirkwood of the Meat Puppets and Les Claypool by Primus , where the four bassists talk about the role of the bass in rock music . In fact, the bass is in the foreground in the sound of these bands due to the strong rhythm.
