Primus ( lat .: The first ) is the name of a rock band from the San Francisco area that has developed a version of the jazzy crossover that they themselves call " psychedelic polka ". The band is also known for bizarre texts and creative animations .
style
The band's rather idiosyncratic style (the “psychedelic polka”) is mainly characterized by dominant bass lines , a percussive sound and the chords of the riffs of guitarist Larry “Ler” LaLonde, which are often regarded as dissonant due to the excessive use of the tritone . The band members are also often said to be highly adept; Claypool in particular , who plays with up to eight-string basses and special double basses, is widely respected for his virtuosity and his distinctive style had a great influence on the younger generation of bassists.
Claypool himself referred to the music in interviews as comics made into music . In this context, the band's album covers and videos, which are known for animated films and clay characters , as well as the contributions of the band to various comic soundtracks , such as South Park, are related .
history
The band was formed in 1984 by Les Claypool and Todd Huth as Primate in El Sobrante , California . Soon after, they renamed the band Primus , as another band claimed the name Primate for themselves. Initially they played with a drum computer and changing drummers, but it wasn't until 1988 that they found Jay Lane , with whom they recorded their first demos. After Huth and Lane left the band due to other commitments in the same year, Les Claypool played for a short time with the metal band Blind Illusion , where he met Larry LaLonde, who joined Primus as the new guitarist. Shortly thereafter, Tim Alexander joined the band as the new drummer. Their first, fully self-produced album, Suck on This , which includes live recordings, was released in 1989. The following year they signed a recording deal with Caroline Records and released their second album, Frizzle Fry , but the next year they switched to Interscope Records and released Sailing the Seas of Cheese with a guest appearance by Tom Waits .
In 1992 he was Cover - EP Miscellaneous Debris , the covers of Peter Gabriel , The Meters , The Residents , Pink Floyd and XTC contains. The next year the album Pork Soda was released , which reached the top ten of the album charts in the USA . In 1994 the line-up Claypool, Huth and Lane came together and recorded the album Riddles Are Abound Tonight under the band name Sausage . They chose this name based on a demo of the same name that they produced under the band name Primus in 1988 , making it clear that Sausage is a side project.
In 1995 Primus released the album Tales from the Punchbowl . That same year Tim "Herb" Alexander left the band and Bryan "Brain" Mantia entered. The Brown Album was released in 1997 . In the same year Primus played the theme song for the cartoon series South Park . The band released another cover EP called Rhinoplasty in 1998, this time with covers from Metallica , The Police and Stanley Clarke, among others .
In 1999 the album Antipop was released , on which prominent guest appearances, for example by Tom Morello , Jim Martin , Tom Waits and James Hetfield can be heard and which was partly produced by Matt Stone , Fred Durst and Stewart Copeland . At Ozzfest 1999 Buckethead , a friend of Mantia and Claypool, appeared as a guest with the group. After the band split up in 2000 in order to devote themselves to various side projects, the reunion followed in 2002, and a year later the EP / DVD Animals Should Not Try to Act Like People with original drummer Tim Alexander was released.
Since the reunification in 2002, Primus have completed three tours exclusively in North America, Tour De Fromage (2003/2004), Hallucino-Genetics (2004) and The Beat a Dead Horse Tour (2006). For fans outside North America there was the DVD Hallucino-Genetics Live in 2004 and the DVD Blame it on the Fish: an Abstract Look at the 2003 Primus Tour de Fromage in 2006. This DVD contains live recordings from the Tour De Fromage also got lots of bonus material, including a mockumentary about the band in 2065. Also in 2006, a compilation of famous Primus titles called They Can't All Be Zingers was released .
In the summer of 2011 Primus toured Europe for the first time since 1998. Jay Lane was hired as a drummer for this tour. In September of the same year the album Green Naugahyde was released .
Jay Lane left Primus in 2013 to pursue other projects; Tim Alexander took his place. In 2014, the album was released primus and the chocolate factory with the fungi ensemble , a new interpretation of the soundtrack of the film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory from the year 1971st
In September 2017 the album The Desaturated Seven was released , recorded with the current line-up ( Les Claypool , Ler LaLonde , Tim Alexander ). The impetus for this album was provided by the texts and the artistic design of the children's book "The Rainbow Goblins" by the Italian children's book author Ul de Rico . Justin Chancellor supported the album as narrator "The Goblin Master".
