Jay Lane is an American musician who became known as the drummer for the bands Alphabet Soup and Ratdog .

Jay Lane began his music career in the early 1980s in the San Francisco Bay Area in the local band "Ice Age" with his friend Dave Shul , who later became guitarist for Michael Franti & Spearhead .

Via Dave Ellis Lane then came to the band The Uptones , for which he worked for two years before he went to Freaky Executives . In 1988 Les Claypool invited him to play at Primus , so Lane was there for 8 months and recorded an album (Riddles Are Abound Tonight), which first appeared under the band name "Sausage". Lane then concentrated again on a commitment to Freaky Executives.

A short time later Jay Lane founded the band Alphabet Soup . With this formation Lane played three albums ("Layin Low in the Cut", "Strivin '" and "You Re It!").

At the same time, Lane teamed up with Charlie Hunter and Dave Ellis to form the Charlie Hunter Trio . In 1993 they released an album of the same name before the 1995 album "Bing, Bing, Bing!"

During this time he also played with former Grateful Dead guitarists Bob Weir and Rob Wasserman , from which the band Ratdog grew. With the death of the Grateful Dead band leader Jerry García , Bob Weir increased his focus on Ratdog, so that the band played more often and went on tours. Lane played two albums with Ratdog (Evening Moods, Live at Roseland).

In 2002 Jay Lane was named "Drummer of the Year" by BAM (Bay Area Music) magazine at the California Music Awards.

In 2005 Lane went on tour alongside Ratdog with Les Claypool's Fancy Band . In 2006 he founded the hip-hop band "The Band Of Brotherz". After several local appearances, the band played across America and recorded two albums in 2009 (Deadbeats and Murderous Medlys, Kama Sutra Styl3).

In the fall of 2009 Lane joined the newly formed band Furthur by Bob Weir and Phil Lesh , but left the band again in the spring of 2010 to play for Primus.

Jay Lane lives in San Francisco with his wife and two children.
