Rob Wasserman

Rob Wasserman (born April 1, 1952 in San Mateo , California - † June 29, 2016 in Los Angeles , California) was an American double bass player and bassist who has worked with many music greats since the beginning of his career in the 1980s.

Career

Wasserman, who was of Jewish faith , had violin lessons since his twelfth birthday; at the age of 20 he switched to bass guitar and double bass. During his studies at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music he met the drummer Charles Moffett senior . Through Moffett senior he came into contact with Dan Hicks , Maria Muldaur , Van Morrison and Oingo Boingo .

In 1979 he met the American guitarist Jon Sholle and worked on his album "Catfish For Supper". Sholle was also a member of the David Grisman Quintet ; shortly afterwards Wasserman also joined the quintet and stayed until 1985. During this time the group released the 1980 album "Quintet '80". More recordings with Dave Grisman followed, but he was also featured on Van Morrison's album "Beautiful Vision".

In 1983 he released his debut album "Solo". His second album under his own name "Duets" was released in 1988. On this album he was supported by several other musicians (including Bobby McFerrin , Rickie Lee Jones , Cheryl Bentyne , Lou Reed and Stéphane Grappelli ). In the 1980s he also worked with musicians such as Elvis Costello and the Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir . Ten years after his first album under his own name, the third called "Trio" was released in 1993. Jerry Garcia , Brian Wilson , Willie Dixon and Branford Marsalis played with him on this album .

Together with Bob Weir he has appeared as a duo since 1988, Wasserman also worked on the Dead album So Many Roads . In 1995 they formed the band Ratdog together . Wasserman stayed in this formation until the end of 2002 and was on the albums "Evening Moods" and "Live at Roseland". He also worked with Gov't Mule and released another album under his own name. In the course of his career he was involved in over 50 sound carriers.

Wasserman joined Ratdog again in January 2012. He died on June 29, 2016 while hospitalized in Los Angeles.
