Rickie Lee Jones
Rickie Lee Jones (born November 8, 1954 in Chicago , Illinois , USA ) is an American singer-songwriter , singer , guitarist and pianist . She shaped a new and often copied style of song arrangement .
Live and act
Jones, who left home at the age of 14, moved to Los Angeles in the late 1970s , where she performed with a program of spoken monologues accompanied by beats. Her debut album, which was influenced by folk , jazz and rhythm & blues , was released in 1979. Chuck E. Weiss was the title character of her hit "Chuck E.'s in Love" contained there. The song says that he is in love with the "little girl who sings this song". She herself called the content of the song fictional. On this early album, greats like Dr. John , Michael Boddicker and Randy Newman keyboards, or Steve Gadd the drums. Michael McDonald ( Doobie Brothers ) sang the backing vocals for RLJ. During this early phase, she lived in Los Angeles in the Tropicana Hotel with her then partner Tom Waits , deeply rooted in a lively music scene shaped by artists such as Jackson Browne , Warren Zevon , Frank Zappa , Eagles , Linda Ronstadt and many more. In 1980 she was nominated for the Grammy in the categories of best new artist and best album.
Another important influence is Sal Bernardi. They met around 1975. She wrote about him in the 1970s "Weasel and the White Boys Cool". In the early 1980s, he began touring and working in the studio with Jones. Their collaboration led to compositions such as "Traces of the Western Slopes" from the 1982 album Pirates and "Theme for the Pope" by The Magazine from 1984, "Flying Cowboys", the title track of the album of the same name from 1990, "Tigers" and " Beat Angels ”from the album Traffic from Paradise (1993). In 1990, the album Pop Pop with jazz standards such as "Dat There" or " Bye Bye Blackbird " was created without his participation , in which she was accompanied by Robben Ford , Charlie Haden and tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson .
In 2003 she released the album Evening of My Best Day in response to the controversial US President George W. Bush , on which she accompanied Ry Cooder and Bill Frisell .
With The Sermon On Exposition Boulevard, which appeared on Blue Rose , Jones entered the German album charts at number 70 in April 2007. For Jones this is the first place in the top 100 of the album charts in Germany. Ben Harper , Victoria Williams , Jon Brion , Alison Krauss and (shortly before his death) Vic Chesnutt also contributed to their 2009 album Balm In Gilead . The Daily Mirror (UK) summarized the work as follows: “30 years after their amazing debut Chuck E's in Love , Jones remains a singular talent who seizes the chance to fully blossom with these songs full of innocence and experience. Songs written over a period of 20 years - sometimes good things take time to mature. "
Jones is on tour in Germany from time to time.
