Bob Weir (born October 16, 1947 in San Francisco ) is an American singer and guitarist, known as a founding member of the rock band Grateful Dead .

biography

We grew up with adoptive parents in Atherton , California . He started playing guitar at the age of 13 . In 1963 he met Jerry García . He was then a member of the band "The Warlocks", from which later emerged the Grateful Dead, whose permanent member he was until their dissolution in 1995 after the death of Jerry Garcías. In addition to the songwriting duo Jerry García / Robert Hunter (music / text), Weir and the lyricist John Barlow contributed significantly to the repertoire of the Grateful Dead. Like Garcia, he adopted the singing of his own songs. As a rhythm guitarist, he was in the background to García, who played all the guitar solos.

Between 1974 and 1977 he was also a member of Kingfish .

Weir released his own albums under his name ( Ace, 1972), as Bobby & the Midnites and since 1995 with his own band Ratdog . He also took part in performances with other former Grateful Dead members under the names The Other Ones and The Dead . In 2009 he founded the band Furthur together with the Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh .

Weir was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 as a member of the Grateful Dead . The racing driver Leilani Münter is his sister-in-law.

Awards

In April 2016 Weir was honored in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology in the species epithet of the fossil otter species Lontra weiri from the Pliocene of North America.
