Leilani Maaja Münter (born February 18, 1974 in Rochester ) is an American racing driver and environmental activist.

Family and personal

Münter is the youngest of four daughters of a German doctor and a nurse from Hawaii . She holds a degree in biology from the University of California at San Diego . She has been married to a New Zealand engineer since March 2009 and lives in Charlotte . The musician Bob Weir is her brother-in-law. She has been vegan since 2011 , after having been vegetarian for decades .

Racing career

Münter's career as a racing driver began in 2001. At the end of 2006, she passed the beginner's test at Daytona International Speedway , which gave her the license to take part in the NASCAR races there . In 2007 she was the fourth woman to take part in the Indy Pro Series . Several long-time IndyCar officials and drivers, including Jaques Lazier , noticed her positively there, as she started in fifth place and reached the fifth fastest lap in the race.
