After the spring tour with The Dead in 2009, bassist Lesh and guitarist Weir decided to form another group for live performances. They were able to win over the band leader John Kadlecik from Dark Star Orchestra , Jeff Chimenti from Ratdog and Joe Russo from Benevento / Russo Duo . Also from Ratdog came the drummer Jay Lane , who switched to Primus in May 2010 .
The band first performed in September 2009 at the Fox Theater in Oakland . Further appearances in New York City , Wallingford and Asbury Park ( New Jersey ) followed that year. At the turn of the year the band performed in the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco . The band was accompanied by Zoe Ellis and Sunshine Garcia Becker. Both stayed with the band for the Florida tour. There was a special concert for Phil Lesh's 70th birthday on May 12 in the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium.
From May 28th to May 30th, the band was one of the main acts at the Furthur Festival at Mountain Aire in Angels Camp ( California ) on one of the five stages. In 2010 the band played at the "All Good Music Festival", "Nateva Music & Camping Festival", "Gathering of the Vibes" and "Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival".
On March 18, 2010, Phil Lesh announced that Jay Lane was leaving the band to play for Primus. He also allowed the band Animal Collective to play the (Grateful Dead) song “Unbroken Chain” for their EP “What Would I Want? Sky “to cover.
