Joe Russo

Life

Joe Russo grew up in northern New York City when he started playing drums when he was eight. A fan of Jason Bonham and Kiss , he first turned to hard rock before being introduced to other areas of music by his drum teacher at the age of 13.

He briefly studied at Berklee College of Music until 1996 before moving to Boulder , Colorado , where he teamed up with several jazz students from the University of Colorado at Boulder to form the jam band Fat Mama . This group played together until 2000 before Russo moved back to New York to Manhattan . Here he met again the keyboardist Marco Benevento , whom he knew from Boston. Promoter Jake Szufranowski booked the two for Madonna's birthday tribute party .

Russo and Benevento then continued to play together as a Benevento / Russo duo , with Russo playing alongside Robert Walter from The Greyboy Allstars . After two years, Joe Russo stopped working with Robert Walter to focus on working with Marco Benevento. From 2004 they occasionally played as a trio with the Phish bassist Mike Gordon . Trey Anastasio joined this trio , on whose solo album "Bar 17" they participated. In this formation they appeared under the name "GRAB". As GRAB Russo played several times with Phil Lesh & Friends . As a result, Russo joined the band Furthur von Lesh and Bob Weir .

For a short time Russo also played in the bands A BIG YES ... and a small no and American Babies . During his work as Fat Mama and Benevento / Russo Duo, he won the Jammy Award in 2000 and 2005 (both as a band) .

In 2013 he founded Joe Russo's Almost Dead , which interprets the music of the Grateful Dead . Since 2013 he has also been playing regularly on recordings and in live performances by Shpongle .
