The Langer Heinrich uranium mine ( English Langer Heinrich Uranium Mine ) located in Namibia on the mountain massif Langer Heinrich in the desert Namib , 80 km east of the port of Walvis Bay in the eponymous town of Walvis Bay . The world's largest uranium mine is located about 40 km to the northwest in the Rössing mine .
The uranium deposit was discovered in 1973 and has been commercially operated in open pit mining by Langer Heinrich Uranium (Pty) Ltd , a subsidiary of the Australian company Paladin Energy , since March 2007 . In 2005 , the mining ministry of Namibia issued a 25-year mining permit for the 15 km long mining area .
In order to finance the repayment of bonds worth 250 million US dollars and the expansion of mining activities in the Langer Heinrich uranium mine laid Energy Resources 2010, five-year running fixed-income securities on a volume of 300 million US dollars.
A “memorial stone” commemorates the visit of Namibian President Hifikepunye Pohamba on March 15, 2007.
In April 2018, the temporary suspension of the dismantling was announced due to poor world market prices.
