Phil Lesh & Friends is an American rock band formed by former Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh in 1998.

The band is not to be seen as a traditional rock band, as there is a constant change of musicians and therefore no grouping is permanent. Former members of Phish , Little Feat , The Tubes , The Blues Brothers , The Allman Brothers Band and Jefferson Airplane also played in this combo. Only four musicians played in this band for a longer period of time, which is known in the fan base as the Phil Lesh Quintet (PLQ or “the Q” for short). These musicians are Phil Lesh, Warren Haynes (including The Allman Brothers Band), Jimmy Herring (including The Allman Brothers Band, Widespread Panic ), Rob Barraco (including The Other Ones ) and John Molo (including the drummer for Bruce Hornsby ). The band played in this group from September 2000 to December 2003. In this composition, the album There and Back Again was released in 2002 , which contained old Grateful Dead songs as well as newly written ones.

In September 2007, the band appeared under partially new line-up in Santa Barbara , California . Alongside Lesh, Campbell and Molo stayed in the band. New to the came singer-songwriter and guitarist Jackie Greene and keyboardist Steve Molitz. Greene had previously toured with various greats in the music business and released his first album in 2005. Molitz previously played in the jam band Particle .

In this formation they also appeared on February 4, 2008 together with Mickey Hart and Bob Weir at the Warfield Theater, San Francisco . The show, called Deadheads for Obama, was in support of the American presidential candidate Barack Obama . Lesh, Hart and Weir hadn't played together since 2004.

Phil Lesh & Friends often used material and ideas from the Grateful Dead. However, they were also influenced by Bob Dylan , Traffic , The Beatles , Led Zeppelin and The Allman Brothers Band and interpreted their songs in their own way. Phil Lesh continues the Grateful Dead's reputation for being an excellent live and jam band that improvises on stage. Due to the influence of the other, changing musicians, the music style of Phil Lesh & Friends is harder and faster than that of the Grateful Dead. The band was particularly influenced by Southern Rock through Haynes and Herring . Lesh personally called this mix of styles " Dixieland Rock ". It was through this mixing and influencing that the old style of Grateful Dead was developed further. The fan base ( Deadheads ) welcomed this balancing act between advancement and loyalty to the old style. In addition to satisfying the old deadhead community, the band also won many new fans.

Like the Grateful Dead before, Phil Lesh & Friends advocate that fans record concert recordings and freely swap such bootlegs . Thanks to the Internet, this is not a problem for fans, especially archive.org, where the Grateful Dead concerts are already available, as well as other critically viewed file sharing systems offer this. Like Bob Weir , Lesh puts songs and even CD covers on his homepage. Lesh also signed a contract for his 2006 tour that a company would record his concerts and immediately put them on the Internet and fans could download them.
