Christopher "Chris" Mark Robinson (born December 20, 1966 in Atlanta , Georgia ) is an American musician . He was the lead singer of the rock band The Black Crowes , which he founded with his brother Rich Robinson in the 1980s.

career

The Black Crowes

At the beginning of the 1990s, Robinson and the band achieved a worldwide success of millions with their debut Shake Your Moneymaker and the international breakthrough. With their successor, The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion , the "Black Crowes" established their mix of retro rock, soul, gospel and country. After several commercially unsuccessful albums, the band separated in early 2002, but started a comeback in spring 2005. In 2011 they temporarily dissolved again.

New Earth Mud

During the break, Chris Robinson tried his solo project New Earth Mud with moderate success . For this he toured in 2003 and 2004. As part of New Earth Mud, there was a renewed collaboration with former members of the Black Crowes. Both Marc Ford and Eddie Harsch contributed to the first album, which was also called New Earth Mud . Audley Freed, who was touring guitarist for the Black Crowes from 1998 to 2001, was part of the band New Earth Mud after the release of their second album This Magnificent Distance .

Chris Robinson Brotherhood

After the Black Crowes announced another break of indefinite length in 2010, Robinson's new project, the Chris Robinson Brotherhood, was presented in the fall of that year. She toured California in the spring of 2011 and was particularly noticeable for her frequent cover songs for the Grateful Dead . Members of the Chris Robinson Brotherhood are keyboardist Adam MacDougall, already known by the Black Crowes, and Mark "Muddy" Dutton on bass, who played with Marc Ford in Burning Tree before he left the band in 1992 for the Black Crowes.

The Chris Robinson Brotherhood's debut album was recorded in January 2012 and was released in Germany in early June 2012 under the name Big Moon Ritual . At this point it was already planned to release the follow-up The Magic Door in the fall of that year , which should rather be a kind of supplement to the previous album. Musically, the CRB sees itself as a psych band and, with its mixture of experimentation and American folk rock music, is often reminiscent of the aforementioned Grateful Dead . At concerts there are also more frequent guest appearances by members of this band, especially Phil Lesh and Bob Weir .

The third studio album by the group Phosphorescent Harvest was released in late April 2014 on Silver Arrow Records. In addition to the aforementioned musicians Dutton and MacDougall, George Sluppick played drums and Neal Casal, known from his collaboration with Ryan Adams, played guitar.

producer

After Robinson had already produced several albums by other artists in the early 1990s, further recordings with him as a producer appeared at the end of the first decade of 2000. Often praised by critics, most of them achieved only moderate commercial success.

Private life

On September 8, 1996, Robinson married Lala Sloatman , a niece of Frank Zappa . The marriage ended in divorce in 1998. After almost 7 years of marriage to actress Kate Hudson , they separated in 2006. They have a son, Ryder Russell Robinson, who was born on January 7, 2004. In 2009, Robinson remarried. Together with his third wife Allison Bridges, he had a daughter on December 26, 2009, who was called Cheyenne Genevieve. That marriage ended in divorce in October 2018.
