Richard "Rich" Robinson (born May 24, 1969 in Atlanta , Georgia ) is an American musician who was best known as the guitarist of the rock'n'roll band The Black Crowes , which he and his brother Chris Robinson in 1984 formed.

Life

Rich and Chris Robinson attended Walton High School in Marietta , Georgia and formed the band "Mr. Crowes Garden ”based on a well-known children's fairy tale. In 1990 they achieved worldwide success with their debut album Shake your moneymaker . With the successor The southern harmony and musical companion they recorded another successful album, on which, in contrast to the rather straight rock of the first release, they changed their style more towards rock, blues and soul.

After various line-up changes and albums that were no longer commercially successful, the group split in late 2001 / early 2002 for an indefinite period. On the website this was referred to as the "hiatus".

After Robinson had spent some time with his family and private problems, which were increasing at that time, and he also used the musical break to realize his interest in painting as a second creative side, he formed a new band "Hookah Brown". This broke up despite the tour before an official release, which played a role in the fact that Robinson, after his experience with the Black Crowes, saw no reason to deal with the compromises and problems of a band again. From this time some song fragments come from, which appeared in 2004 on the solo album Paper , which was subsequently recorded by Robinson, but which mainly contains new songs. Here he also appears as a singer for the first time.

In March 2005 the Black Crowes went on tour together again. Several new albums and DVD releases followed.

In October 2011 his second solo album Through a crooked sun appeared on the various guest musicians, such as B. Warren Haynes contributed to the recording. As part of a European tour for this album, he came to Germany for several concerts in early 2012. Before that, the EP Llama Blues, which contains four songs, was re-released as a download. There was also another edition of Through a crooked sun that contains all four songs from the EP as bonus tracks. As already indicated in the title Llama Blues , the EP is very blues-heavy, resulting from a multitude of slide guitars, harmonica and vocals, which were recorded via a harmonica microphone. On no other recording does Robinson go so much in the direction of black, electric blues.

Steve Molitz, who is a keyboardist a. a. from Particle and his collaboration with G.Love or Phil Lesh & Friends is not only involved in the album Through A Crooked Sun , but is now also part of the live formation of the accompanying band called Crooked Sun. Molitz has also been friends with the door guitarist Robbie Krieger since 2002, with whom he is pursuing his own band project The Roadhouse Rebels . Robinson joined the group for several concerts in 2012. In August 2012 the album Flesh and Blood by Sandi Thom was released that Robinson produced. Audley Freed and Steve Gorman , both known from their work with the Black Crowes, also featured on several songs .

Because of Hurricane Sandy , the Hudson River flooded the Black Crowes' own warehouse in the fall of 2012, so that Robinson lost much of his equipment. Only a few guitars could be restored.

In September 2013, Robinson's father Stan passed away, who had brought him to play the guitar.

With The Ceaseless Sight Robinson released his third studio album in the summer of 2014. It was recorded at Applehead Studios in Woodstock , where Rick Danko of The Band had lived at times . The sound of the album is held acoustic than on Through a Crooked Sun . According to Robinson, he used up to 15 different guitar tunings , many of them open tunings . In addition to his long-time companion Joe Magistro on drums, only Marco Benvento for the keyboard instruments and Amy Helm, the daughter of the band drummer Levon Helm, for some backing vocals , took part in the recording . Robinson categorically ruled out another collaboration with his brother in a PR interview for the album.

A signature model from the Gibson guitar company was also released in mid-2014 . It is a detailed replica of Robinson's '63 Gibson ES-335 .

In November 2014 Robinson released another album with The Woodstock Sessions Vol.3 . Like its predecessor, it was recorded live in front of an audience at Applehead Studios in Woodstock on May 31 and June 1, 2014. It was released by the label Woodstock sessions and includes songs of the previous studio albums, as well as one cover piece of the rock band Velvet Underground , from the German Krautrock band Agitation Free and the soul-jazz make vibraphonist Freddie McCoy .

In January 2015, Robinson again confirmed the breakup of the Black Crowes in an interview with Rolling Stone .

In summer 2016, he replaced Mick Ralphs at Bad Company on their US tour.
