Jorma Ludwik Kaukonen Jr. (born December 23, 1940 in Washington, DC ) is an American blues , folk and rock guitarist of Finnish descent. He was a founding member of the bands Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna .

Kaukonen was born in Washington, DC, the son of a Finnish diplomat . At a young age he was enthusiastic about the blues. In 1957 he had his first rock 'n' roll band with Jack Casady . He also accompanies Janis Joplin on her first appearances in pubs and folk clubs with the guitar. In 1961 he began to study sociology at Santa Clara University in California . After completing his studies in 1965, he joined the band of Paul Kantner and Marty Balin . Kaukonen himself reported that he gave the band the name Jefferson Airplane - derived from his own nickname Blind Thomas Jefferson Airplane , which a friend had given him because of his fondness for blues music and Blind Lemon Jefferson .

In 1970, Kaukonen and Casady began playing Airplane Blues alongside their performances with Jefferson. They called their second band Hot Tuna . When the double burden became too great, they decided on Hot Tuna, which is still on tour after more than 30 years.

Since the mid-1990s, Kaukonen and his wife have been running the Fur Peace Ranch Guitar Camp in Pomeroy (Ohio) with a recording studio, concert hall, music library, restaurant and weekend courses with well-known musicians.
