Marty Balin (2006)

Marty Balin (born January 30, 1942 in Cincinnati , Ohio , as Martyn Jerel Buchwald , † September 27, 2018 in Tampa , Florida ) was an American rock musician (vocals, guitar, harmonica). He was a co-founder of the rock band Jefferson Airplane .

life and career

Balin was the son of Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe and came to California when he was four. Balin, who studied at San Francisco State University in San Francisco , originally wanted to be a painter. However, his participation in a production of the musical West Side Story awakened his love for music, which was supported by the singer Johnny Mathis . In 1962 he changed his name to Balin and recorded the singles Nobody But You and I Specialize In Love . He was the singer of the group Town Criers and a member of the Gateway Singers .

In 1965 he met Paul Kantner , with whom he founded Jefferson Airplane. The band was unable to perform in the established music clubs, and so Balin and three partners opened The Matrix club on Fillmore Street in San Francisco. Jefferson Airplane had its first appearance there on August 13, 1965. At first they played folk rock , but soon became a driving force of the emerging psychedelic rock .

Balin left the group in 1971 because of the members' drug use, among other things. His band Bodacious DF only existed briefly and produced a single album. In 1975 he returned to his original band, which had since been renamed Jefferson Starship . His song Miracles became a hit.

In 1978 Balin began a solo career. Between 1981 and 2016 he recorded 13 albums, the first of which was the most successful and peaked at number 35 on the US charts. The titles Hearts and Atlanta Lady were extracted from this. In 1979 he co-wrote and produced the rock opera Rock Justice . With Paul Kantner and Jack Casady , his old colleagues from Jefferson Airplane, he founded the KBC Band in 1985 . In 1989 he took part in the Jefferson Airplane Reunion Tour and recorded a corresponding album.

Marty Balin continued to be a soloist afterwards, but also took part in Kantner's Jefferson Starship - The Next Generation from 1993 to 2003 .

In 2016 Balin received a Grammy Award for Lifetime Achievement and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 with Jefferson Airplane .

Balin was married three times and had two daughters from the first two of his marriages.
