Paul Kantner (2006)

Paul Lorin Kantner (born March 17, 1941 in San Francisco , California - † January 28, 2016 ) was an American rock musician (guitar, vocals) and co-founder of the rock band Jefferson Airplane .

Life

Paul Kantner was the first Marty Balin invited to the Jefferson Airplane Project in 1965 . Kantner wrote a number of songs for the band that often revolved around science fiction topics : For example, the text of the song Crown of Creation from the album of the same name from 1968 consists only of quotations from the science fiction novel Wem , published in 1955 does the earth belong? by John Wyndham . With David Crosby and Stephen Stills he wrote the piece Wooden Ships, which appeared on the Airplane album Volunteers . Kantner's 1970 solo album Blows Against the Empire - with contributions by David Crosby, Grace Slick , Jerry García and Graham Nash - is about the fact that around 1990, seven thousand hippies hijacked a government-built spaceship in order to emigrate into space . It was nominated for the Hugo Award .

Airplane singer Grace Slick and Paul Kantner became a couple, their daughter China was born in 1971. They recorded the albums Sunfighter (1971) and Baron von Tollbooth and The Chrome Nun (1973) before finally renaming Jefferson Airplane to Jefferson Starship in 1974 - Kantner had already used the name for Blows Against the Empire in 1970 .

In 1980 Kantner suffered a cerebral haemorrhage . In 1983 his solo album The Planet Earth Rock and Roll Orchestra was released . In 1984 Kantner left Jefferson Starship and reached a court order that the band had to change their name and henceforth called Starship . With Marty Balin and Jack Casady he formed the KBC Band in 1985 , which recorded an album.

In 1989 there was a brief reunion of Jefferson Airplane. Then Kantner revived Jefferson Starship - this latest incarnation of the band is commonly referred to as Jefferson Starship - The Next Generation .

Kantner died on January 28, 2016 of multiple organ failure and septic shock as a result of a heart attack that he had suffered a few days earlier. He leaves behind two sons and a daughter.
