About this picture

Stockheim is a municipality in the Lower Franconian district of Rhön-Grabfeld and a member of the Mellrichstadt administrative community .

geography

Stockheim is located in the Main-Rhön region on the Streu , at the foot of the Rhön.

history

Until the church is planted

Stockheim is mentioned for the first time in a document from the year 779. A certain Arndeo made a donation to the Fulda monastery , which already had rich property in this area. In 979 the place came under the rule of the Diocese of Würzburg . From 1435 to 1480 Stockheim was pledged to Count Georg I von Henneberg-Aschach . The Würzburg cathedral chapter , which later belonged to the place, handed it over to the prince-bishop (and his office of Mellrichstadt ) in the 17th century . With the office of the Hochstift Würzburg , which belonged to the Franconian Empire , after the secularization in 1803 in favor of Bavaria, the place came to Archduke Ferdinand of Tuscany in 1805 to form the Grand Duchy of Würzburg and with this in 1814 it finally fell to Bavaria. In 1818 the political municipality was established.

Parish Stockheim

Until 1375 the village belonged to the parish Mellrichstadt as a branch . His own pastor is mentioned, "who was set up by the pastor in Mellrichstadt". On the basis of requests, the establishment of a separate parish was approved. A confirmation document dated July 14, 1375 by Bishop Gerhard von Schwarzburg raised the community to an independent parish. The Holy Vitus patron was the parish. The confirmation document states: “The branch church of St. Märyrers St. Vitus in Stockheim is provided with income, tithe and sacrifice in such a way that a priest of his own can be maintained; In addition, these chain stores (meaning the Stockheim believers) often cannot come to the church service due to the far distance from the mother church in Mellrichstadt and the bad weather, as well as the dispensing of the sacraments and sacramentals there with great difficulty and inconvenience for the pastor in Mellrichstadt The pastor in Mellrichstadt received four marks annually on Martin's Day as compensation . The Stockheim pastor, on the other hand, had to settle in Stockheim, take part in the annual synod and levy taxes on the diocese. For this he was exempt from worldly taxes and received taxes from the community. The right of presentation initially lay with the pastor of Mellrichstadt, later with the Würzburg cathedral chapter . At the end of the 16th century, the village was transferred to the Würzburg Monastery, which means that the right of occupation also went to the Bishop of Würzburg. The parish temporarily had branches in Willmars , Völkershausen and Ostheim before the Rhön . The parish is organized in the Stockheim-Ostheim parish community.

The listed rectory from 1831 was badly damaged by fire in February 2019, and the priest could only be rescued from the building with the help of local residents. Since then, the building has been repaired again.

Stockheim village fortifications

Stockheim's village wall dates from the 15th century. This included three towers. There were also two gates, one in the direction of Mellrichstadt , the other in the direction of Ostheim before the Rhön . In addition, there were some structures that were built in addition to security. The village wall was laid out like a rectangle. It mostly consisted of largely uncut, but expertly stacked rubble stones that were held together without mortar. Outside the wall there was a hedge to ward off game, which was cut twice a year to keep it tight. There were also four sections of moats . The first, called Hirtengraben, ran between the Upper Gate and the Middle Mill. The brewing pit was laid out along the litter from there to the lower mill. The Körteles or Karlsgraben ran from there to the Lower Gate. In the north, the village moat delimited the village.

Over time, the wall fell into disrepair. So it was refused in 1876 to restore part of it because it had become useless. With a resolution of September 8, 1884, the residents were allowed to put down the walls or to use them as part of the building. Trenches and hedge are no longer mentioned. After the Second World War , the wall was partially demolished again due to the land consolidation . The residents were allowed to lay the wall for an access road. So it is only preserved in a few places.

The village also had two gates . The lower gate was after the Brückengasse from the direction of Mellrichstadt, the upper gate was at the level of the Gartenstrasse when the village is reached from Ostheim on the main street. The construction of the Upper Gate was discussed on April 30, 1864, the letter and seal are from November 23, 1865. There was a small building near the Lower Gate that was demolished at an unknown time and rebuilt as a poor house near the Mittelmühle . The two gate pillars became the subject of a dispute in 1909. A pillar covered a window in Link's cabinet-making shop. Since the request for termination was rejected, it was removed at night. The local writer Krieg noted: "But the backward-looking municipal administration, which worried that they could no longer find the exit from the town without these pillars, had them re-established until one day they fell victim to progress."

Nowadays only two of the three towers that flanked the wall remain. One with pinnacle n stands at the northeast corner of the wall ring. The second is west of this one. Both of them have the entrance halfway up. The last tower, called Nesenturm, was located near the lower mill on the southeast corner of the wall ring. It served as a "vineyard prison". It is not known when this was put down. From June 17, 1687 it is recorded that one of the towers was inspected and classified as defective. A renovation was necessary, which was done from scratch in 1988 with the two remaining towers.

In addition, two log houses were part of the village fortifications. One was located near the Darrhaus at the Upper Gate, the other in the immediate vicinity of the Mittelmühle.

The Stockheimer Warte also belonged to the defense of the village .
