Mellrichstadt is divided into nine districts:

history

Until the early 19th century

In 822 Mellrichstadt was first mentioned in a document as Madalrichistreuua . There were other early mentions under the names Madalichesstrouue (845) and Madalrichesstat (889). The Carolingian royal court Madalrichesstat was the center of the Franconian Westergau . In 1078 the battle of Mellrichstadt between the supporters of King Heinrich IV and the opposing king Rudolf von Rheinfelden took place in the vicinity of the town . Mellrichstadt was owned by the Würzburg Monastery as early as the 13th century and remained - although pledged and redeemed several times - through the centuries. After the line of the Counts of Henneberg ceased to exist around 1219, the Bishop of Würzburg tried to collect the bishopric's fiefs , which were connected with the burgrave office . A bitter dispute ensued, which ended with Count Poppo von Henneberg's renunciation of Mellrichstadt and Meiningen .

In 1232/33 it was elevated to the status of a city, which in the Middle Ages was the seat of an important Latin school . 1356 in Mellrichstadt is a medieval leper detectable, which was designated as Siechen- or Leprosenhaus. The former Oberamt Mellrichstadt of the Würzburg bishopric was left to Archduke Ferdinand of Tuscany after secularization in 1803 in favor of Bavaria in 1805 to form the Grand Duchy of Würzburg and with this in 1814 it finally fell to Bavaria . In the course of the administrative reforms in Bavaria, the municipality edict of 1818 created today's municipality, which was also the seat of a regional court .

From the early 19th century

Jewish families had resided in the city at least since the 19th century . During this time (1869) the village's Jewish cemetery was laid out. The synagogue at Hauptstrasse 60 was badly damaged by SA men in the November pogrom in 1938 and then torn down. Since 1988, a memorial plaque in black lettering on a black background , which is attached to the side of the building that is barely visible from the main road, has been commemorating this event on the commercial building built on the same site .

Until June 30, 1972, Mellrichstadt was the district town of the Mellrichstadt district . Since then, Mellrichstadt has been the third largest city in the Rhön-Grabfeld district after Bad Neustadt and Bad Königshofen .

During the Cold War , Mellrichstadt was right next to the Iron Curtain . In 1962 the Hainberg barracks of the Bundeswehr was completed. Up until its abandonment on September 30, 2006, the 352 Panzer Grenadier Battalion with around 1,000 soldiers and other units were stationed there.

Incorporations

On April 1, 1971, the previously independent community of Roßrieth was incorporated. On January 1, 1972 Frickenhausen was added. Bahra followed on April 1, 1973. The series of incorporations was completed with the incorporation of Eußenhausen on January 1, 1978 and Mühlfeld and Sondheim on May 1, 1978.
