history
Until the church is planted
The Würzburg bishopric exercised state rule in Saal from 1368 to 1803. From 1500 it was part of the Franconian Empire . The place belonged to the Grand Duchy of Würzburg of the Archduke Ferdinand of Tuscany before it became part of Bavaria with the Treaties of Paris in 1814 . In the course of the administrative reforms, the current community was created with the community edict of 1818 .
Waltershausen Castle
Gut and Schloss Waltershausen, formerly owned by the von Kalb family , became the property of the Göttingen scholar and economic historian Georg Friedrich Sartorius at the beginning of the 19th century , who was raised to the hereditary Bavarian nobility due to his acquisition as Freiherr von Walterhausen. The estate with the castle essentially remained in the ownership of the Sartorius von Waltershausen family until the 20th century. In 1944 the castle was taken over by the Deutsche Reichspost as a rest home for postal workers. It has been privately owned since 1986.

coat of arms
Blazon : “Divided by red and gold; above a silver lily stem with two flowers, covered by a fallen golden crutch cross that ends in wall anchors; a black table cross below. "
The lily stem in the upper part of the coat of arms symbolizes the pilgrimage church Mariae Heimsuchung on the Findelberg with its pilgrimage as well as the parish church Mariae Himmelfahrt. The crutch cross is the coat of arms symbol of the Counts of Wildberg, who died out around 1300 and were of great importance for the municipality in the High Middle Ages. The Marschalke von Ostheim lived in the Waltershausen district from 1456 to 1782. The table cross comes from her coat of arms. The colors black and gold (below) and the colors silver and red (above) are reminiscent of other territorial lords that were important for the Saal adSaale market, the Counts of Henneberg and the Bishopric of Würzburg .
Municipal alliance
The Markt Saal an der Saale is a member of the municipal alliance Fränkischer Grabfeldgau.
Culture and tourism
Buildings
- Findelberg Church
- A good 300 meters north of the village of Saal is the pilgrimage church of the Visitation of Mary on the eastern slope of the Findelberg, accessible via a footbridge over the Franconian Saale. It was built in 1781/86 according to plans by master bricklayer Hans Michael Schauer von Wermerichshausen; the tower was built in 1499. The ceiling painting of the Assumption of Mary was created in 1795 by the artist Johann Peter Herrlein , who died in Saal in 1799 and was buried in the Findelbergfriedhof. In 1965 the church was restored.
- St. George Church
- The church of St. Georg is in Waltershausen. It was built from 1484 to 1485 in front of the castle in place of an earlier church. In 1523 Waltershausen became Protestant and it has had a Protestant parish since 1600. The church is the burial place of the Marschalk von Ostheim . Moritz Marschalk von Ostheim was buried there in 1523. An exception was Pastor Johann Adam Schönwetter, who also found his final resting place in the church in 1668. The last time the church was restored was from 1969 to 1974.
- Waltershausen Castle
- From 1619 to 1627 Georg Philipp Marschalk von Ostheim had the current palace complex initially built on one level on the foundations of an old fortified castle. About a hundred years later, the palace underwent further changes under the influence of Balthasar Neumann , who integrated a rococo hall into the entire central building on the second floor. Balthasar Neumann gave this hall an ingeniously constructed ceiling vaulted into the roof structure with rich stucco work that is depicted in many works of art history. The structure is one of the finest creations of the Franconian Rococo and gives the hall a festive character.
