The Roman Catholic Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary is a pilgrimage church on the Findelberg near Saal an der Saale in the Lower Franconian district of Rhön-Grabfeld . The church is one of the architectural monuments of Saal an der Saale and, together with the cemetery cross, the war memorial chapel , the Lourdes grotto , the Ölberg grotto , the Joseph's grotto , the Visitation grotto , the rosary staircase , two wayside shrines in the churchyard and the Stationsweg under number D-6 -73-160-1 registered in the Bavarian Monument List . The church is looked after by the parish community "Um den Findelberg".

history

A pilgrimage church already existed here in 1451. The current church was built between 1780 and 1785, including the church tower from 1499. Hans Michael Schauer created the plan. In 1891 the high altar was destroyed by fire and replaced.

description

The church tower is a three -story Julius Echter tower on the southern wall of the choir . The sound windows are ogival . The choir with the five-eighth closing is in the east. The nave with four window axes has a curved gable in the west . Both parts of the church have a mirror ceiling.

Furnishing

The high altar houses the pilgrimage picture in the midst of two side figures, a Mother of God with a child in a halo . On the left side altar you can see an altar painting of St. Joseph , on the right one of St. Wendelin . Figures of the four evangelists are attached to the pulpit . Opposite the pulpit is a Pietà from around 1500. The organ is set up on the western gallery . The ceiling painting in the nave, Assumption of Mary , was created by Johann Peter Herrlein as one of his last works in 1795. He is buried in the cemetery of the pilgrimage church.
