from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Peter Herrlein (born August 24, 1722 in Münnerstadt , † February 25, 1799 in Saal an der Saale ) was a German painter . He came from the Herrlein family of painters .

Life

Johann Andreas Herrlein's father, who came from Hammelburg , was a baker and barrel painter in Münnerstadt and from around 1732 in Kleinbardorf . From him, Johann Peter and his brothers Johann Andreas Herrlein and Andreas Herrlein received their first training in painting . After that he is said to have worked as a painter's assistant in Vienna , which cannot be documented. Of his nine children, the sons from his first marriage to Katharina Först, Johann Georg Herrlein (* 1756) and Kilian Herrlein (* 1766), also became painters. From 1749 Herrlein lived in Kleineibstadt , from where he - apart from a brief attempt in 1757 to get a job as a painter at the court in Fulda - performed all of his work before moving to Saal an der Saale shortly before his death living son Andreas moved.

Services

Johann Peter Herrlein was one of the leading artists in Lower Franconia in the 18th century. In addition to working primarily in the Catholic churches of Grabfeld , he also carried out assignments in the Protestant churches of Sondheim vor der Rhön and Herpf, then in Thuringia . Particularly noteworthy is a completely preserved Holy Grave (replica) originally made for the parish church in Kleineibstadt and now in Würzburg , which he painted in perspective in the style of illusionistic quadrature painting by Andrea Pozzo , whose writings he had studied. Streets in Bad Kissingen , Münnerstadt , Großbardorf , Schweinfurt and Saal an der Saale are named after Herrlein .
