The place probably originated from an Alemannic settlement. The megalithic tombs in the community forest date from the time of the band ceramics and the Hallstatt period . The Burgstall Altbessingen is of medieval origin ; only a grave remains of the complex today.

Altbessingen was always part of the Tithe Court Arnstein, Trimberg and was subordinate to the Würzburg prince-bishops .

A parish has been recorded in Altbessingen since 1172; In 1803 the branches Gauaschach (until 2000) and Neubessingen were added. The current church was built in 1614.

On July 1, 1974, Altbessingen became part of Arnstein as part of the municipal reform .
