history

First documentary mention

On December 19, 823 in "Frankonofurt" (Frankfurt) King Ludwig the Pious confirmed to the then Bishop of Würzburg Wolfgar that the donation of 742 and thus the income from the "Chuningashaoba Guinedisheim" (Gänheim) would continue to exist (from the Würzburg archive, Year 823). Around the year 742 there was a Gänheim settlement. This earliest mention (which is often purely coincidental) only proves that the settlement already existed at the relevant time. This means that Gänheim can also be significantly older.

The name Gänheim

The oldest names for Gänheim are Gouvenheim, Gawinheim, Geinhem, Gehnheim and Genheimb. The name is interpreted on the basis of numerous researches. The spelling Gouvenheim or Gawinheim is split into Gawin and Heim. Gawin is an abbreviation of the personal name Gawibald. So Gawinheim was the settlement, the home, the apartment of Gawin, Gauwan or Gowin.

Village events over the centuries

In 1057 Gänheim came into the possession of one of the most powerful East Franconian secular lords, Count Otto von Schweinfurt , Duke of Swabia . The first aristocratic family in Gänsheim appeared in a document in 1189, when a noble family appeared in documents that had their seat in Gänsheim and named themselves after the village.

In 1614, under the government of Prince-Bishop Julius Echter, the first small schoolhouse was built. On October 31, 1631, the Thirty Years War came in the form of the first Swedish horsemen to Arnstein and Gänheim with looting, pillage and extortion. A few years later, two Croatian regiments belonging to General Isolani were quartered in Gänheim (extract from the Franconian Courier from 1928). Almost the whole place burned down in 1634.
After the war, Gänheim only had two male residents.

For the year 1811 it is documented that the Gänheim settlement had 86 houses and 439 inhabitants. A volunteer fire brigade was founded in 1875, and the first aqueduct was built in 1911.

A total of 50 Gänheim men lost their lives in World War II .
