Prince-Bishop and Abbot of Fulda Heinrich VIII von Bibra (Johann Andreas Herrlein)

Johann Andreas Herrlein (born October 10, 1723 in Münnerstadt , † September 3, 1796 in Fulda ) was a German painter .

Life

The father of Johann Andreas Herrlein, Johann Herrlein , who came from Hammelburg , was a baker and barrel painter in Münnerstadt and from around 1732 in Kleinbardorf . From him, Johann Andreas and his brothers Johann Peter Herrlein and Andreas Herrlein received their first training in painting . His first independent activity was in 1746, painting the ceiling frescoes and the altarpiece in the parish church of St. Martin in Eltingshausen (today part of the community of Oerlenbach ). In the same year he seems to have found acceptance into the painting workshop of his future father-in-law Emanuel Wohlhaupter in Fulda . After his death in 1756, Herrlein became court painter to the prince-bishops in Fulda. On their behalf, but also for private individuals and churches from the diocese in Fulda, Herrlein created several hundred works until his death. Johann Andreas Herrlein had many interesting ideas to sell his paintings. On May 15, 1768, he invited people to a “target shooting from Painting to Fuld”. A total of “42 pieces of painting” were offered as prizes, a collection of his paintings that are worth a “fortune” today.

Services

In addition to the creation of portraits and a large number of works for churches in the Fulda area, Herrlein was primarily involved in mediating between Dutch landscape painting of the 17th century and painting of the German Romanticism by reflecting the inner mood and feelings of the people in his Gave expression to paintings. A street in Fulda is named after him. In 2004, Deutsche Post issued a stamp for the Boniface anniversary based on a motif by Herrlein.
