Werner Kathrein

Werner Kathrein (born September 11, 1953 in Marburg ) is a Roman Catholic theologian and cathedral dean in the diocese of Fulda . He is emeritus full professor for middle and modern church history at the theological faculty in Fulda .

Life

Kathrein passed the Abitur in 1972 at the St. Johann Abbey School in Amöneburg . He then studied theology and philosophy in Fulda and Freiburg . He was ordained a priest on July 2, 1978, whereupon he worked for two years as a chaplain in Fritzlar, before he was given leave of absence in 1980 to study church history at the theological faculty of the Albert Ludwig University in Freiburg. 1982 doctorate he with a study of the history of the monastery Schlüchtern in the age of Reformation Dr. theol. After serving as secretary to Archbishop Johannes Dyba from 1983 to 1986 , he was appointed cathedral capitular at the Fulda Cathedral Church in 1987.

Since 1986, Kathrein had been head of adult education in the diocese and spiritual rector as well as chairman of the board of trustees of the Fulda Bonifatiushaus . Werner Kathrein is the diocesan representative of the Association for Marriage, Family and Life Counseling in the Diocese of Fulda. Since 1996 he has been the official diocesan judge. In 1993 he was appointed professor for church history at the theological faculty in Fulda and in 1997 he was appointed cathedral curator . He has been a member of the Historical Commission for Hesse since 1993 .

Pope John Paul II awarded Kathrein the title of Papal Honorary Prelate in recognition of his services at the end of 1999 .

He retired as professor on September 30, 2018.
