Quadrature painting

The quadrature painting a wall or ceiling painting in a perspective manner that often creates the illusion that a space is larger than it actually is. The first elements of quadrature painting appeared in Pompeian painting , also to make rooms appear larger.

With the discovery of the laws of central perspective, mathematically correct quadrature paintings were made for the first time in the Renaissance .

In Germany, quadrature painting did not attract greater attention until the Baroque period through stage and ceiling painting.
