About this picture
St. Nicholas

Geldersheim (Franconian: Galderschum ) is a municipality in the Lower Franconian district of Schweinfurt , three kilometers west of the independent city of Schweinfurt, in the Main-Rhön region . It is one of the oldest villages in Franconia, which was first mentioned in a document in 763, and has a well-preserved, typically Franconian townscape with gable-sided houses, a fortified church and a village gate.

Geldersheim was a strategic outpost of the Würzburg bishopric , on the Würzburg – Meiningen road , which was opened in 1796 to bypass the Protestant imperial city of Schweinfurt . To this day, the Schweinfurt suburb is said to have maintained its centuries-long rivalry with the city and to be closer to the Catholic but much more distant Würzburg . This connection to the Hochstift is also shown in the local coat of arms.

geography

The community is located in the fertile Schweinfurt Gau, in which intensive agriculture has always been practiced. The village also belongs to the Upper Werntal: The "Euerbach", a tributary of the Wern , which is called "Biegenbach" from the boundary of the district, flows through the village itself in a west-east direction . This flows into the Wern shortly before Schweinfurt.

In the direction of Egenhausen is the “Asbach” forest area, the forest in the direction of Sömmersdorf is called “Vorberg”.

There is only the district of Geldersheim. During the Bavarian territorial reform in the 1970s, no place was incorporated into Geldersheim. However, one of Geldersheim the southern, larger part of the Conn Barracks : a former air base of the Wehrmacht and later barracks of the 2014 resolution US Army Garrison Schweinfurt .

The municipalities of Niederwerrn , Schweinfurt , Bergrheinfeld , Werneck , Wasserlosen and Euerbach border the district of Geldersheim .

history

Until the church is planted

Geldersheim was first mentioned in 763 in a document from the Fulda monastery . In 976, Emperor Otto II issued certificates, as did Emperor Heinrich III. in 1049. Geldersheim was the Franconian royal palace and was the central place in the area. The surviving choir of the former Palatinate Chapel and archaeological finds from the Carolingian-Ottonian period, which were found during archaeological excavations in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, bear witness to this medieval era.

As early as 1230, a large parish church in the late Romanesque style was built next to the old palatinate chapel, which was already consecrated to St. Nicholas. In the years 1610 to 1618 today's parish church of St. Nicholas was built in its current form. The tower, with its Welschen Haube , was increased in 1692 and has dominated the western part of the Schweinfurt region ever since. The interior of the church was decorated in baroque style in the 18th century. The imposing frescoes by the Franconian painter Johann Peter Herrlein in the choir and nave date from this time .

Until the collapse of the Würzburg monastery in 1802, Geldersheim was a prosperous market town despite several major fires and wars. From 1500 to 1806 the place was in the Franconian Empire . After the secularization of Bavaria in 1803, the former tithe of the Würzburg Monastery was given to Archduke Ferdinand of Tuscany in 1805 to form the Grand Duchy of Würzburg and with this in 1814 it finally fell to Bavaria. In 1818 the political municipality was established.

Population development

The community had a jump in population of 500 people in 2015 as a result of the closure of the Schweinfurt US garrison in 2014. Americans, including family members, were not counted in the population statistics. After her departure, there was suddenly a lot of living space available, with a very good economic situation in Schweinfurt at the same time.
