history

Until the church is planted

An early medieval burial ground was found in a gypsum quarry north of Sulzheim . An excavation in 1964 uncovered several very poor graves that date from around 600.

As part of the Hochstift Würzburg (with some rights also of the Ebrach Monastery ) Sulzheim was secularized in 1803 in favor of Bavaria in the Peace of Pressburg 1805 left to Archduke Ferdinand of Tuscany to form the Grand Duchy of Würzburg , with which it fell to the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1814 . The Sulzheim office with 21 surrounding villages and Sulzheim Castle went to Thurn und Taxis in 1815 as compensation for the post office shelf in the former Grand Duchy of Würzburg and in the Principality of Aschaffenburg . In the course of the administrative reforms in Bavaria, today's municipality was created with the municipal edict of 1818 .

21st century

On June 30, 2007, a plaster information center was opened in the still-preserved eastern part of the former three-part tithe barn of the Ebrach monastery. The focus is on the development and history of the dismantling of the basic plaster layers of the Middle Keuper in Sulzheim. In addition to information about the crystal formation of this salt of sulfuric acid, about the karstification phenomena of the near-surface gypsum deposits and the various possible uses of this most important natural resource of the Steigerwald foothills, one learns a lot of interesting facts about the flora and fauna of the nationally important nature reserve of the Sulzheimer peaks. At the Gips-Informationszentrum (GIZ) a seven-kilometer-long gypsum course begins with five information boards all about gypsum on the topics of archeology, gypsum works, nature conservation, mining, gypsum mills, gypsum hills and buildings made of gypsum stone.

traffic

Road traffic

Sulzheim is located on the B 286 , which is developed as an intersection-free expressway to the A 3 in the south and to Schweinfurt in the north. It has three and four lanes towards Schweinfurt, Sulzheim has its own junction. The travel time from Sulzheim to the city center of Schweinfurt is only about 15 minutes.

Kitzingen-Schweinfurt railway line

At the beginning of the 20th century, Sulzheim was connected to the Bavarian rail network. In 1893 the Kitzingen- Gerolzhofen section of the so-called Steigerwaldbahn (also Lower Steigerwaldbahn) was completed. The branch line connected from 1903 Kitzingen with the Schweinfurt Hauptbahnhof and was one of the longer branch lines in Germany. In addition to Sulzheim, the district of Alitzheim was also equipped with a breakpoint.

Traffic on the route began to be reduced in the 1980s. From 1987 only passenger buses drove between Gerolzhofen and Schweinfurt, freight traffic was given up in mid-2006. For a long time there have been initiatives to reactivate passenger traffic on the disused route. At the beginning of 2019 a fierce dispute broke out over the design of the restart, which has continued to this day, which became a political issue .
