Alitzheim is the second largest town in the Sulzheim community in the Lower Franconia district of Bavaria in the Schweinfurt district . It is part of the Gerolzhofen administrative community .
Geographical location
Alitzheim is located on the wide plain that extends between the Main and Steigerwald from Gerolzhofen to Schweinfurt ( Steigerwald foreland ). One tenth of its 650-hectare corridor is covered with forest. Due to the proximity of larger lakes, such as the Alten and Hörnau lakes, Alitzheim was the only stork village in what was then the district of Gerolzhofen until the 1960s .
history
Alitzheim was first mentioned in 1127 in the foundation letter of the Cistercian monastery Ebrach as "Alotzheim". Archaeological finds prove, however, that the place was created around the year 600 in a marrow reclaimed from the Hörnau Forest as the “home of Adalolf or Adelolf”. Later, the shared Bishopric of Würzburg , the monastery of Fulda , the counts of Hochstadt and Count Gebhard von Sulzbach rule. By 1137 the Cistercians converted the village into one of their official seats.
In 1553 the troops of Margrave Albrecht Alcibiades von Brandenburg-Ansbach devastated the Alitzheim district and threatened the population with arson . Alitzheim was one of the centers of the witch burn in the 17th century. In the Thirty Years' War the imperial Gallatschen riders failed because of the strong fortification of the city of Gerolzhofen and set Alitzheim and several other places in the area on fire.
The place was destroyed again in World War II. On April 10, 1945, an SS Junker School from Munich tried to slow down the American advance and began to fire at the advancing tank units. In the following years the American soldiers shot at the village. Street fights later developed in which several buildings were destroyed by flames. The place was incorporated into Sulzheim on January 1, 1972.
Attractions
The landmark of the town with its current population of around 630 is the baroque church, consecrated in 1731, with its striking tower and its artistically valuable furnishings. During the renovation, carried out from 1986 to 1988, excavations revealed foundations or post pits of four previous churches, the oldest of which is dated to the 9th century. After that, a choirless hall church was built in the 11th century.
