The Evangelical Lutheran parish church of St. Michael is the village church of Sondheim vor der Rhön in the Lower Franconian district of Rhön-Grabfeld . The church is one of the architectural monuments of Sondheim vor der Rhön and is registered together with the cemetery under the number D-6-73-167-2 in the Bavarian list of monuments . It belongs to the parish of Sondheim in front of the Rhön-Stetten- Fladungen in the dean's office in Bad Neustadt an der Saale .

history

The church was built at the beginning of the 16th century and was expanded in 1605. The attached late Gothic chapel dates from 1512.

description

The church consists of the nave and the eastern choir tower . The southern half of the nave ends at the western wall of the church tower. The northern half, on the other hand, ends with the eastern wall of the church tower , so it is longer. The northern wall of the nave has a double row of mostly arched windows and an additional rectangular window near the floor. The southern wall of the nave has three pointed arched windows without tracery , with a rectangular window above the lower rear window. In the transition area from the southern wall of the nave to the church tower, a stair tower is attached to the gallery, in front of which the chapel with pointed-arched tracery windows. The church tower has a pointed roof and sound windows with double round arches.

Furnishing

The magnificent pulpit altar contains figures by the sculptor Caspar Hippeli and was painted in color by Johann Peter Herrlein in 1775 . The gallery , which is double-level on the south side and to reaching the ceiling on the west side organ ( housing carries the 18th century) is painted with biblical scenes. The ceiling painting of the Ascension of Christ was also created in 1775 by Johann Peter Herrlein. The font was created in 1606 and is decorated with a relief of the sinking of the Egyptians in the Red Sea.
