The Rhön- und Saalepost is published in Bad Neustadt an der Saale and is a regional newspaper that is mainly read in the Franconian Rhön area and in Grabfeld . Until the German War of 1866, the newspaper was also distributed in the Gersfeld and Tann districts , which at that time belonged to the Kingdom of Bavaria . The sold circulation was 4,708 copies in 2016, a decrease of 17 percent compared to 1998.
history
The newspaper was founded as Rhön- und Saalpost in 1862 by Max Josef Mayer, who came from Regensburg. He ran the newspaper in a liberal spirit, as evidenced by the New Town newspaper war in 1869 with the newspaper Das Bayerische Vaterland . In the context of the elections taking place in the Kingdom of Bavaria at that time, publishers and newspapers sided with progressive forces and, for example, defended their Jewish citizens.
In 1893 Mayer's stepson Gallus Rötter took over the management of the publishing house after the death of the newspaper founder. It appeared continuously, except for the years 1945–1949. The majority of the other Lower Franconian newspapers had long since been shut down.
The newspaper remained in family ownership until 2008. Then the newspaper was sold to a Berlin financing company. The commercial print shop was founded in 2011 as an independent company, Rötter-Druck . In 2012 the 150th anniversary of the newspaper was celebrated.
