Hot Tuna
Hot Tuna ( English for "hot tuna") is an American blues rock band, an offshoot of Jefferson Airplane , which was originally called Hot Shit (English for "hot shit"). With Hot Tuna, Jack Casady (bass) and Jorma Kaukonen (guitar) initially appeared alongside their engagements with Jefferson Airplane.
With Will Scarlett ( harmonica ) they recorded their first album Hot Tuna in 1970 , which was a live recording. With Papa John Creach ( violin ) the publications First Pull Up, Then Pull Down (1971) and Burgers (1972) followed. After Creach left the group to work on Jefferson Starship's album Dragon Fly , The Phosphorescent Rat was released , which was recorded in 1973. Sammy Piazza was on the drums for the last three Hot Tuna publications. America's Choice and Yellow Fever followed in 1975 and Hoppkorv in 1976 , all with Bob Steeler, who replaced Piazza. Hot Tuna played more electric guitars on these recordings and had a harder sound.
At the end of 1977 the group separated and Casady and Kaukonen pursued their own band projects. In 1983 there was a short tour together, but the group only reformed in 1986. In the course of time there were several line-up changes, only Casady and Kaukonen formed the constant core of the band. Even after the turn of the millennium, Hot Tuna is still on tour. They present their music in both acoustic and electric versions. The focus has shifted from rock to country blues .
