"Papa" John Creach , sometimes Creech written (* 28 May 1917 in Beaver Falls , Pennsylvania ; † 22. February 1994 ) was an American violinist , the late 1970 became famous when he with the rock band Jefferson Airplane occurred . He then played with other rock bands, such as The Dinosaurs and Hot Tuna .

Creach began learning classical music on the violin at the age of 15. When he was 18 the family moved to Chicago , where Creach was a guest musician with the Illinois Symphony Orchestra while he was studying classical violin. He later started playing in clubs with jazz and R&B bands to make money. Even church music was part of his repertoire.

In the 1940s he had his own trio, the Johnny Creach Trio (guitar, bass and violin), which initially performed primarily in hotels and later also in bars and clubs. His other jobs included a multi-year commitment on a cruise ship.

In Los Angeles he met Joey Covington, who later became the drummer for Jefferson Airplane . Covington introduced him to Marty Balin of Jefferson Airplane, who invited Creach to perform with the band in San Francisco in October 1970 . The success led to a joint tour and later appearances with other rock bands, including The Dinosaurs and especially Hot Tuna . In 1993 he toured Europe again with Jefferson Starship.

Creach also made an appearance in the motion picture An Riot of Old Men .
