A revolt of old men (original title: A Gathering of Old Men ) is a German - American film by film director Volker Schlöndorff from 1987 and is based on the novel of the same name by Ernest J. Gaines from 1983.
action
Louisiana in the early 1970s: an African-American land tenant shoots a white farmer in self-defense . In order to prevent the lynching of the alleged perpetrator Mathu, which is actually pending according to the old southern state custom, the young white plantation owner Candy Marshall rounds up 18 old African Americans, who each confess the act to Sheriff Mapes, who was also summoned by Candy , with a " I am Spartacus " statement present their own, freshly shot rifle as a murder weapon. The sheriff, who would actually prefer to go much again for fishing, takes almost reluctantly, yet thorough the investigation, and at the end of the actual shooter can to a fair trial hope. The white mob has to leave without having achieved anything. In contrast to the original book, there is no shooting in which the actual shooter and the leader of the white mob kill each other.

As with the film Death of a Salesman , Volker Schlöndorff wins the broadcaster CBS as co-producer for the production. The film was set in the Laurel Valley and the small town of Thibodaux in Louisiana , which was used as a backdrop for Angel Heart in the same year and in 1974 for the film Hunting in the Swamp .

Hellmuth Karasek wrote in Der Spiegel that the film “marks the accuracy with which Schlöndorff viewed the life and circumstances of his elderly people. Anyone who is used to the lacquered, restlessly flickering, noisy film images from America will be confronted with calm, poverty and bare faces: a film without the glamorous smile of the jacket crowns. "
Karsten Witte said for the time : "With all the lightness of the casual characterization, the art of an undramatic concentration of motifs, this film hits the tone of an almost biblical ballad."
