Ulzhan - The forgotten light is a 2007 film by the German film director Volker Schlöndorff .
action
Charles' destination is the holy mountain Khan Tengri in Kazakhstan, where the shamans used to quietly retire to die. While searching for it, one day he meets a mysterious figure, a shaman named Shakuni, who deals with rare words. By chance Charles ends up in a village where he meets the young nomad Ulzhan, from whom he buys a horse to continue on his way. Against Charles's wishes, the young woman clings to his heels, follows the man, who has been marked by fate, through barren steppes, a nuclear-contaminated nuclear test area , endless oil fields in which oil rigs rise like meneteers up to the sacred mountain on the border with China. Once in the mountains, Charles asks his companion one last time to leave him alone for good. Ulzhan hesitantly obeys, but turns back briefly and ties his horse to a rock in the hope that Charles will come back. While she finally rides into the valley without looking back, he climbs higher and finally lies down in the snow. As he turns his head to one side, he sees his horse grazing alone.
Reviews
"Stylized film as a hymn to life, which comes up with intensive landscape shots, atmospheric music and metaphorically charged place, whereby the desired lightness occasionally suffers from formal artistic sense."
“'Ulzhan' is not one of those films that is easily consumed between two hamburgers, but rather throws barbs and demands attention. And it's worth it. The biggest plus in this silent fight between a disaffected man and a courageous woman are the fascinating cinemascope images by cameraman Thomas Faehrmann, who is resistant to the temptations of the documentary. The result: a poetic odyssey into mental areas in between. "
“A meditative journey into the heart of a captivating country and into the heart of a fascinating man. An archaic, poetic, almost wordless love story. And a wonderful ode to life. "
“'Ulzhan' is basically an archaic fairy tale. A meditation. Despite all the melancholy, a comforting film that Schlöndorff can ironically watch for himself in order to regain courage. "
