content

The journalist Georg tabs, staff illustrated a Hamburg magazine, comes to Lebanon to discuss the civil war to report. Doubts about his job grow. He knows how well the horror of war sells, especially when it is illustrated with appropriate pictures, which a photographer who is also sent out is supposed to provide. He doesn't know who is fighting whom and why. He had increasing problems with his wife, whom he left behind in northern Germany. His private life seems as problematic to him as the war in Lebanon.

Georg Laschen meets a woman in Beirut , a German who has lived in Lebanon for years. He falls in love with her, but there is no permanent bond because she has another lover besides him .

background

Volker Schlöndorff said about his film:

“It's not about the war, but about the man who is supposed to report on it. He expects death and horror, but finds life. Because reality is always different when you experience it than when you are only informed about it. "

criticism

“Schlöndorff's media-critical film has great moments, but remains stuck in a purely protocol-based realism. His perfect reconstruction of war scenes in the original locations seems strangely uninvolved. Excellent, as always, Luther's camera skills. "

Michael Fischer criticizes that the personal sensitivities of the privileged German protagonists of the film remain in the foreground:

"He does not understand the nature of the terrible, confused events in Lebanon, which are reflected in page-high magazine photos"

- Der Spiegel from October 12, 1981

Norbert Jochum criticizes the press releases on the film:

"The smell of corpses: ... I don't want to write about the film, but about the fact that and how death and war and violence and dying are dealt with without hesitation in the vicinity of the film."
