Maurice-Alexis Jarre (born September 13, 1924 in Lyon , † March 29, 2009 in Los Angeles , California ) was a French composer who is mainly known for his film music . He is the father of the musician and record producer Jean Michel Jarre .
He has received numerous awards for his artistic work. Among other things, he received an Honorary Golden Bear at the Berlinale and has received several Oscar and Golden Globe awards.
Act
Jarre wrote the music for a large number of films, including Jesus of Nazareth , Rivals Under the Red Sun , Shogun , Gorillas in the Mist, and The Dead Poets Club . His film music has been nominated for an Oscar several times, which he also won three times: For Lawrence of Arabia (1963), Doctor Zhivago (1966), and Journey to India (1984); all three films were directed by David Lean . In 2009 he received the Honorary Golden Bear at the Berlinale Film Festival in Berlin.
Private life
Jarre has been married four times. From his first marriage to Francette Pejot (in the 1940s, after the Second World War ) comes his son Jean Michel Jarre , who is considered one of the pioneers of electronic music . He divorced his wife a few years after the child was born and had very little contact with the family. He refused a musical collaboration with his son until his death. With the naming of the asteroid (4422) Jarre , however, both were honored together.
In 1965 Maurice Jarre married the French actress Dany Saval . With her he had a daughter, the production designer Stephanie Jarre. The marriage ended in divorce in 1967. In the same year he married the American actress Laura Devon . He adopted their son Kevin Jarre , a screenwriter who later worked on films such as Tombstone and Glory . Devon and Jarre divorced in 1984. In the same year Maurice Jarre went into his fourth marriage to Fong F. Khong.
Maurice Jarre died of cancer in Los Angeles in 2009 at the age of 84.
