The Last Tycoon is an American feature film from 1976. It was directed by Elia Kazan and starred Robert De Niro . The other cast include Tony Curtis , Robert Mitchum , Jeanne Moreau , Jack Nicholson , Ray Milland and Anjelica Huston . The film is based on the unfinished novel The Last Taikun by F. Scott Fitzgerald .

action

The film is about the successful, seemingly infallible Hollywood producer Monroe Stahr. During the day, the “ tycoon ” controls the fate of the film business, making confident decisions about film stars, directors, scriptwriters and budgets. In the evening, however, Stahr returns to his luxurious house, where he lives alone with his servant. One day he notices the young Kathleen Moore, who reminds him of a former girlfriend. He falls in love with her, but, apart from one passionate night, is rejected by her. Stahr suffers from the situation, which is also reflected in his professional environment. Finally he is dismissed by the board of directors. Stahr says goodbye to his previous life in his office - this time all alone - with a role-play that he once presented to a scriptwriter and thus encouraged him to write better scripts.

criticism

The lexicon of international film judged that in the “portrait of a powerful Hollywood studio boss of the 1930s” the “interesting topic [...] had been flattened”. Despite “very good cast, elaborate equipment and craftsmanship”, the film lacks “the last bite [sic]”, so that the film “gets stuck in a series of episodes”.

Award

The film was nominated for an Oscar in 1977 in the category Best Art Direction-Set Decoration .

Trivia

Shortly before the end of the film, the Hollywood lettering can be seen in the background , as it is known in the production year 1976 and also today. Since the film is set in the 1930s, one should have seen the "Hollywoodland" lettering, which was initially expanded and installed from 1923 to 1949.
