Dana Andrews
Carver Dana Andrews (born January 1, 1909 in Covington County , Mississippi , † December 17, 1992 in Los Alamitos , California ) was an American actor .
Life
Andrews was born one of thirteen children to a Baptist minister . In 1931 he went to Los Angeles to find a job as a singer. In order to secure his livelihood, he took various positions. One of his employers believed in Andrews' talent and funded him studies at opera and drama school. 1940 Andrews received his first role in William Wyler's film The Westerner alongside Gary Cooper .
His role in Ritt zum Ox-Bow in 1943 is often described as his most important. However, Andrews achieved stardom in 1944 with the film noir classic Laura with Gene Tierney and in 1946 with the Oscar-winning drama The Best Years of Our Life . In 1950 he shot another film noir classic at the side of Gene Tierney with the law of the big city . This was his fifth and last film with the actress.
Andrews' popularity quickly faded in the 1950s. From 1963 to 1965 Andrews was President of the Screen Actors Guild . However, his later films were not commercially successful; he only received engagements for so-called B-films and took refuge more and more in alcohol. After successfully fighting his alcohol addiction, he campaigned for addiction prevention campaigns in the 1970s and worked primarily for television.
Andrews later developed Alzheimer's disease and died of heart failure in 1992. He left two daughters and a son from his marriage to his second wife, Mary Todd - his first, actress Janet Murray, had died in 1932 shortly after their son was born.
In the opening track Science Fiction / Double Feature of The Rocky Horror Show , Dana Andrews is mentioned because of the prominence of his role in The Curse of the Demon .
Andrew's youngest brother was the actor Steve Forrest (1924-2013).
