William Schallert (1990)

William Joseph Schallert (born July 6, 1922 in Los Angeles , California - † May 8, 2016 in Pacific Palisades , California) was an American actor . Since 1947, the busy supporting actor has taken on roles in almost 100 feature films, 35 television films and over 240 television series.

Life

William Schallert's father, Edwin Schallert, was the editor-in-chief of the theater section in the Los Angeles Times . That is why Schallert junior came into contact with the medium of theater and drama at an early age. After graduating from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), he joined the theater company The Group Theater in the 1940s , where he worked, for example, on the play Rain , directed by Charlie Chaplin . Schallert made his debut as a film actor in 1947 in a small supporting role in the short film Doctor Jim at the side of Stuart Erwin . It was the prelude to a career spanning more than 60 years in which Schallert appeared in an extraordinary number of films and TV series.

At first, however, Schallert's roles were mostly limited to a few lines. Schallert's best-known films of the 1950s include Singin 'In The Rain , Written In The Wind and The Incredible Story of Mister C. However , he did not really become famous until 1963 when he played the role of father in the popular television series The Patty Duke Show with Patty Duke took over. By 1966, Schallert was seen in 104 episodes of the television series. He also took on leading roles between 1986 and 1988 in the series The New Gidget , of which 44 episodes were produced; and as a lodger Wesley Hodges in the television sitcom All My Children , which was made from 1991 to 1993. Schallert played historical figures several times, including General Robert E. Lee in Torches in the Storm (1986) and Harry Hopkins in Firestorm and Ashes (1988). He has guest roles in many of America's most famous television series, such as Nilz Baris in the Starship Enterprise episode Do You Know Tribbles? ( The Trouble With Tribbles ) or as Stanley Perkins in four episodes of The Waltons .

In addition to his countless television appearances, Schallert also continued his film career. In the Oscar-winning film classic In the Heat of the Night (1967) he starred alongside Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger in the supporting role of the mayor and in the adventure film Die Reise ins Ich (1987) he played a doctor. In old age he also appeared on board in front of the camera as a guest actor on the television series Desperate Housewives and Zack & Cody . He played Mayor Norris in three episodes of the television series True Blood between 2008 and 2011. In addition to his acting career, Schallert was also involved in the Screen Actors Guild , the Hollywood actors' union . Between 1979 and 1981 he served as President of the Screen Actors Guild.

From 1949 until her death in 2015, Schallert was married to actress Leah Waggner . The couple had four sons.
